Frank Wesley Jones

Frank Wesley Jones, 93, Ekron, died Jan. 18, 2003 at Hardin Memorial Hospital, Elizabethtown. He was born in Hardin County Sept. 25, 1909, the son of the late Jesse Hume Jones and Anna Jestine Yates Jones. He was a member of Brandenburg United Methodist Church, where he was active with the Methodist Men, retired from Olin Chemical Company, a former member of the Ekron Fire Department and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Mr. Jones is survived by his wife, Lucille Frances McMenama Jones; a son John H. Jones of Seabrook, Texas; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Jan. 22 from the chapel of Bruington-Jenkins-Sturgeon Funeral Home with Rev. Willard Knipp officiating. Burial was in the Cap Anderson Funeral Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Ken Stivers, Michael Embry, Wesley Jones, Glenn Gibson, Ken Upchurch and Raymond Witten.

Served in the 638th Tank Destroyer Battalion in WWII. Was wounded (in Belgium?) in 1945 and sent back to England. Was discharged from the Army Air Force as a sergeant in 1945. Honorably discharged at Ft. Knox KY, November 17, 1945. Army serial number 35 044 180. According to his discharge papers, he had 2.5 years of high school.

638th Tank Destroyer Battalion[18]

Established 15 December 1941 at Camp Shelby, Mississippi. Arrived at C herbourg, France, 7 September 1944 equipped with M18s. Entered the line near Prummern on 20 November and supported operations against the Siegfried Line. Shifted to the Ardennes sector around Rochefort, Belgium , on 22 December. Fought to reduce the Bulge during January 1945. Supported Roer River crossing in February. Crossed the Rhine River on 1 April. Advanced across Germany and reached the Elbe River near Wittenberg on 24 April. Attached to: 84th Infantry Division.

Served for many years on the Town Board of Ekron, KY as Town Treasurer . He also maintained the town water system. Advised the newly formed Ekron Volunteer Fire Dept.
