age 94 years

I think we can be certain this Sarah Whitman Carlock.

DAR records, and popular concensus give her birth year as 1730.

It may be the case that her children inaccurately put her age on her stone. Or it may be her actual age. Given the years of birth of her children, I believe she was born around 1844.

However, I cannot figure there could be any other Sarah Carlock buried 20 feet from Mary Melinda "Polly" Carlock Jackson. I stood and scratched my head when I came across this marker!

It is truely remarkable her stone exists today. Evidently this marker was not known to Marion P Carlock when he wrote the history of the Carlocks book.

Sarah was born in Virginia, married Hanchrist Carlock 1764. Their first child, Abraham was born in 1765.

Many decendants of Hanchrist and Sarah are member of the DAR due to the Revolutionary War service of Hanchrist.

After Hanchrist died in 1803, Sarah with many of her children migrated to Tennessee.

They spent many years there, and later son Abraham and his family, daughter Polly and her family, along with their mother Sarah came to Illinois.

We can only imagine the spirit and diligence of these early pioneers. They could have never left Virginia, they could have been content to stay in Tennessee. But they traveled on.

If they wanted to eat, they had to shoot it or grow it, if they wanted a home, they had to clear a place and build it.

With none of the conveniences we know, they raised large families. Sarah's children learned to read and write. They were active members of the communities they helped establish.

The Carlocks of Virginia brought more than their modest belongings with them, they were well known for their industry and integrity.
