Raymond Melvin Black, 77, of 2300 Forest Dr., Waynesboro, died Monday afternoon (Sept. 3, 2010) at Waynesboro Community Hospital.
He was born in Lexington July 3, 1913, a son of H. Porter and Betty Moore Black.
He was a member and active deacon of the Wayne Hills Baptist Church and was a member of the Shenandoah Valley Gem and Mineral Club.
Mr. Black served with the U.S. Army during World War II.
After 40 years of service, he retired from DuPont Co. in 1976.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Harvey Black.
Survivors include his wife, Gwendolyn Fields Black of Waynesboro; three sisters, Dorothy Heizer of Fairfield, Lula Pultz of Buena Vista and Elizabeth Palmer of Atlanta, Ga.; four brothers, Thomas Black and Coburn Black, both of Lexington, Charles Black of Natural Bridge Station and Walter Black of Greenville; 19 nieces and nephews; and 29 great-nieces and great-nephews.
A service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Wayne Hills Baptist Church by the Rev. Phillip Hunt. Burial will be in Augusta Memorial Park. The casket will be placed in the church at 10 a.m.
Active pallbearers will be Steve Heizer, David Heizer, Thomas Black Jr., Henry Black, Richard Black, Johnnie Hunton, Page Anderson and Randall Fortune.
Honorary pallbearers will be co-workers in the field maintenance department at DuPont Co., active deacons of the Wayne Hills Baptist Church, members of the James Nodine Sunday School class, members of the Gem and Mineral Club, members of the former Shenandoah Valley Trailer Club and friends who reside on Forest Dr. and Belvue Rd.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight at McDow Funeral Home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Waynesboro First Aid Crew.
