Henry was the only boy in a family of nine, and he was the youngest to boot! He had always been called "Bud" although he was named officially in the traditional Holland manner after his paternal grandfather. He was only nine years old when his father died. His mother and the younger children moved to town and Bud grew up there and graduated from the Shelby High School.
