"Mrs. Elizabeth Ladd died at her residence in Eugene on Saturday night, December 3, 1898, after an illness extending over 16 weeks. Her ailment was spinal trouble. She was born in Edgar County, IL, April 2, 1841, making her past 57 years of age. Six sisters preceded her to the grave. Three brothers, Angus, Alfred, and Emit Vanhoutin, survive her. She was a member of the Christian Church and had many noble traits of character. Her husband Leonard Ladd died March 11, 1883." - Newport Hoosier State, Wednesday, December 14, 1898
