Jeremiah was the son of James Tarleton. He married Eleanor Medley on 20 January 1782 & they had 11 children. Jeremiah became the richest man in the St. Francis Church congregation. He was owner of the Tarlton Tavern on the Frankfort Pike, a farmer, & much involved in local politics. Jeremiah became one of the largest land owners in western Scott Co., KY, justice of the peace, & county sheriff.

There were two contemporary Jeremiah Tarleton/Tarltons in Scott County, Kentucky. They were apparently cousins. This Jeremiah is often referred to as a "Jeremiah The Catholic Tarlton." The second is referred to as "Jeremiah The Protestant Tarlton."
