He was born November 23, 1923 in Detroit, Michigan, the son of the late Russell Curtice Bortles and Myrl Kendall Bortles. He married Dorothea "Dotty" Hennigan on September 5, 1953 in Detroit, Michigan.
He was a 1941 graduate of Linesville High School in Linesville, PA. where he was a stellar basketball player.
An Air Force veteran, he flew B-29 bombers during World War II and later served in the reserves.
He worked in the service department at Rockwell International. He enjoyed sports, especially basketball, baseball, and golf. He was an avid NASCAR fan, collecting NASCAR models, and enjoyed building model airplanes.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Carlyle, in 1997.
