Alexander Spiers passed away Tuesday at his home in Grant township. Mr. Spiers had reached the ripe old age of over seventy-five years. He was born in the parish of Colomonell, Ayrshire, Scotland, September 13, 1838. His father, who was a miller by trade, die d when Alexander was a small boy. Only a few years later his mother died also. The boy was cared for by relatives until he was old enough to take care of himself.
He engaged in farming in Scotland until 1801, when at the age of twenty-three he came to America, coming to Bureau county, Illinois, where he farmed until 1874, when he came to Tama county, Iowa. In 1860 he married Miss Nancy F. Blackburn. They have been blessed with nine children, all of whom are living and all of whom reside in this vicinity, with the exception of one daughter, Mary, who is the wife of George Atkison, of Spencer, South Dakota . Mrs. Atkison arrived about a week ago and was here at the time of her father's death. There is one other daughter, Agnes. The boys names are William, Alexander, James, John, Robert, Albert and Jesse. Mr. Spiers had three brothers that were known by a number of Traer people, but they have all passed away years ago. One brother, William died in Chicago about twelve years ago. The funeral services were hold at the home yesterday at 1 p. m. and were conducted by Rev. Kennedy, a former pastor of the Congregational church of Dinsdale, with which Mr. Spiers was affiliated, and who is at present the pastor of a church a t Greenfield, Adair county, Iowa. The remains were laid to rest in the Buckingham cemetery. Mr. Spiers was always a strong man and free from sickness all his life until about eleven years ago when he began to be troubled with diabetes. During the last two weeks of his life, he suffered considerable. The immediate cause of his death was heart trouble. Mr. Spiers was a successful farmer and leaves an estate of 400 acres of Tama county land. His death brings sadness to a large host of warm friends. The whole community extends sincere sympathy to the bereaved family.
