Joseph Schmidt - The La Veta Signature - February 13, 1992 - Services were held in Monte Vista Saturday for Joseph "Joe" Schmidt, 69, who died February 4, from an apparent heart attack. Schmidt of Monte Vista was ice fishing west of that town when he fell into the hole. The Rio Grande County Dive Team was sent to the scene and retrieved the body around 5:15 P.M., Tuesday. An autopsy showed no water in his lungs. Born January 6, 1923 in Walsenburg to Albert and Myrtle Schmidt, Joe grew up in Gardner. He was a retired government trapper and ditch rider. Survivors include his wife, Marie, of Monte Vista; a son, Ernest, of Morrison; two daughters, Dorothy Ruggles, Albuquerque, New Mexico and Kathy Christensen, Blanca; sister Dorothy Arnold of la Veta, four grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Olme and Sharp Funeral Home, Monte Vista, is in charge of arrangements
