Peter L. Wilson, 79 , who lived nearly all of his life a few miles southwest of Traer, died unexpectedly about 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon, July 23, at his home of a heart attack. Mr. Wilson was the youngest of the family of seven children of Peter and Emmaline Lawson Wilson, early residents of the Traer community, and was born on the Wilson homestead January 2, 1887. He was reared to manhood on the farm, and attended high school in Traer, graduating in 1904. He also attended a business college in Des Moines. As a young man he formed a partnership with a neighbor friend, Clarence Archer, of Crystal township, and for three years they farmed a section of land near Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada. After this experience they returned, deciding north Tama county for farming opportunities was hard to beat. Pete had farmed here since. He was Perry township assessor for 25 years or more, before and after the county assessor system was established. He was regarded by the county assessor as one of the more efficient members of his staff.
Peter was married February 2, 1916, to Beulah Stoakes, daughter of the late Walter C. and Phoebe Stoakes. Beulah died in child birth four years after their marriage. The son, Evan, survived his mother and has been farming near Traer many years. On June 28, 1927, Peter married Ruth K. Spawn. A daughter, Crystal Faye, was born to them. Crystal, who is now the wife of Keith B. Aubrey, lives with her husband at Phoenix, Arizona, and came from there by plane after learning of her father's death. There are four grandchildren. The only living member of the family of Peter Sr and Emmaline Lawson Wilson is Mrs. Nellie Currens of Traer, widow of John R. Currens.
Brothers and sisters of Peter who preceded him in death were three brothers, John L., Andrew Clarence and Sheridan S. Wilson, and 2 sisters, Grace, and the late Mary Wallace Wilson of Traer, who made a home for her brother Sheridan, many years. Peter was a member of the United Presbyterian church of Traer and a member many years of Hesperia lodge, A. F. and A. M.
Funeral services were held in the church Tuesday afternoon conducted by the Rev. Kenneth MacLeod, pastor. Mrs. Burdell Staker sang, accompanied at the organ by Mrs. Leroy Whannel. Honorary pall bearers were O. O. Owens, John Montgomery, James R. Wilson, Newell Stoakes, Frank Zhorne and Clarence Archer. Acting pall bearers were Donald Stark, Wayne Stevenson, Rudy Podhajsky, John Wilson, Logan Wilson and Russell Wilson. Interment was in Buckingham cemetery. Fraternal rites by members of Hesperia lodge were held at the church because of the deluge of rain. George Rosenberger of the Toledo lodge served as acting master.
Here from a distance for the services in addition to the daughter, Mrs. Aubrey, were Mr. And Mrs. Ralph Wilson of Belding, Michigan, Mrs. Arthur Bandicof Las Vegas, Nevada, a close friend of the Wilsons, who plans to stay with Mrs. Wilson about two weeks; and other relatives and friends from Clinton, DeWitt, Cedar Rapids, Waterloo, Cedar Falls, Humboldt, Des Moines, Newton, Lake City, Vinton and Reinbeck.
