Benjamin Franklin Johnson was born in Butler County, Ohio to James and Mary Ann (Meeker) Johnson, both of Virginia. He served 'with distinction' during the Civil War as a wagoner for Company E, One Hundred Forty Fourth Regiment, Indiana Volunteer Infantry. After the war, Benjamin became a farmer, and then married Sophia Shaw June 5th, 1867 in Georgetown, Ohio. They had 4 children; Charles, Albert, Anna and Edward Johnson. Benjamin was an avid hunter who was socially and civilly active in his community. He visited with family and friends regularly, participated in traditional celebrations, participated in and won shooting competitions, and even served as a jury member in a murder trial. Benjamin died at the age of 91.
