Obituary from the "Postville Herald" of Postville, Iowa:
Funeral services were held May 1 at 1:30 p.m. at St. John Lutheran Church, Farmersburg for Richard Koopman who died Thursday, April 29, 1971 at the Central Community Hospital, Elkader, following a brief illness. The Rev. R. H. Steege officiated.
Richard Koopman, son of Henry Koopman and his wife Johanna, nee Deters, was born October 4, 1915 in Clayton County near Postville. He was baptized December 6, 1915 in St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville and confirmed at St. Paul's August 24, 1930 by Pastor R. B. Garten. He attended schools in Clayton and Fayette counties.
On April 25, 1940 he was united in marriage to Gertrude Heins. They started farming on a farm near Gunder, then for a short time he worked at Raths in Waterloo. Returning to farming Mr. Koopman farmed near Garnavillo, Farmersburg and Gunder. In 1954 the couple moved to their present farm near Farmersburg.
Mr. Koopman was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Farmersburg. He was serving currently on the church council, was a member of the Farm Bureau and worked for the ASC office in Elkader.
He is survived by his wife Gertrude; three daughters, Karen (Mrs. Marlan Squires) of Fayette; Sharon, (Mrs. Lee Krambeer) of Monona; Susan, (Mrs. James Bollman) of Farmersburg; a son Kim at home; five brothers, Gerhard of Postville; Alfred of Waterloo; Adolph of Hustisford, Wisc.; Harold of Monona and Harlan of Cedar Rapids; three sisters, Frieda, (Mrs. Howard Henkes) of Seneca, Wisc.; Ella, (Mrs. Eldon Kurth) Monona and Irma, (Mrs. Paul Hess) of Brookfield, Wisc. There are four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a granddaughter, Sandra Bollman.
Burial was in the Farmersburg-Wagner cemetery.
