She graduated from Delta University in 1938 and Peabody College in 1940. During World War II she was the Civilian Director of labor relations with the Army Engineers at the Holston Ordinance Works, Kingsport, Tenn. She also worked on the Manhattan Project, Oak Ridge, Tenn.
