Lyal "Pete" Hardesty, 90, of 306½ W. Brown Street, Augusta, passed away at his home Monday morning, March 19, 2001, in the outstanding care of St. Joseph's Hospice.
Lyal E. Hardesty, son of Ray and Mary (Evert) Hardesty, was born February 4, 1911 in Amboy, Illinois. As a child he moved with his family to rural Fairchild, and there he attended country school. On May 13, 1942, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps, and served during WWII, as an airplane mechanic. Until his discharge on October 13, 1945, he was stationed for the majority of his enlistment in Texas. He was united in marriage to Lorraine Pettis on January 3, 1948 in Augusta. The couple lived in Augusta, where he had been employed for Seif Implement. He later owned and operated Pete's Repair Shop, retiring in 1973. For over 50 years he had been an active member of the Augusta American Legion Post # 291. He had served on the Augusta Volunteer Fire Department for 21 years. He was also a lifetime member and Past President of the Chippewa Valley Antique Engine and Model Club. Lyal's interests included deer hunting, playing cards, and when his health failed him, he enjoyed spending hours working on crossword puzzles. From his early years of threshing oats on the family farm he acquired an interest in steam engines. He purchased a Case 1903 Steam Engine, which he drove in the Strum Steam Engine Days and the Augusta Bean and Bacon Day Parades. He also participated in the Eau Claire Pioneer Days.
He is survived by his wife, Lorraine of Augusta; sister, Gladys Johnstone of Bellingham, WA; brother, Ray Hardesty of Fairchild, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Thelma Lubinski and Bernice Staats.
Memorials may be directed to St. Joseph's Hospice, the Augusta Area Nursing Home Activity Department, and the Augusta Bridge Creek Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad.
Funeral Services will be held Thursday, March 22, 2001, at 1:30 p.m. at the Anderson Funeral Home with Pastor Bob Hoekstra officiating. Burial, with military rites conducted by the Augusta American Legion and V.F.W. will be in the West Lawn Cemetery in Augusta.
Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday and until time of services Thursday at the funeral home.
