Mrs. Lucy Withers Sheffield, widow of John W. Sheffield died at her home near Ridgeway, Wednesday night.

The deceased is survived by two sons and two daughters, William and John Sheffield and Misses Susan and Lucy, all of Ridgeway.

Henry Bulletin, Martinsville, Va: August 14, 1923:
The funeral of Mrs. Lucy Withers Sheffield took place from the home of the deceased, "The Sycamores", near Ridgeway, Friday afternoon (August 10, my insertion), at 3:00 P.M.

The Funeral Service was conducted by: Rev. C.M. Wales, Pastor of the Broad St. Christian Church of Martinsville and interment was in the family Burial Ground.

Pallbearers were Messrs. G.A.Brown, Jno. R. Smith, John W. Gravely, T.G. Burch, J.W. Jones of Martinsville, Mr. William Mitchell, Of Ridgeway. Among the flower bearers were Messers, G.B. Dudley, George L. Gravely, W.H. Gravely, J.W. Booker, Jr., J.W. Carter, Senator W.A. Garrett and Mr. Charles Price, and others.

Appropriate funeral hymns were sung by Mrs. W.H. Shultz, Miss Mary Booker, Mrs. Nellie Lightly, Miss Georgia Griggs, Mrs. Virginia Brown, Messrs. W.H. Burge and J.D. Sparrow.

Announced in the last issue of the Bulletin, Mrs. Sheffield's death, as announced in the last issue of the Bulletin, which occurred on the 8th instant followed a long illness.

A daughter of Alfred A. and Susan Sheffield Withers, she was born in Salem, VA, on Oct.7, 1874 and was therefore a little less than 49 yrs. old at the time of her death.

On her paternal side, she was a descendant of the late General Jones W. Sheffield, a Virginian who achieved distinction in War of the Revolution. She was also a niece of Col. Wm. A. Sheffield, of this County.

She was educated in private schools and in the year 1896 married to her cousin John Waddy Sheffield of this County, who died several years ago. Of this union, four children survive: W.A. and John W. Sheffield and Susan E. and Lucy W. Sheffield.

She was a talented woman of an exceptionally fine mind with a loveable and strong character and winning personality, which attracted to her through life many warm friends,(and)won the esteem of all who knew her. She was a loyal and earnest member of the Christian Church and a devoted wife and mother.
