Mother's birth name was Nora Houston, as a small child { the story goes, past down from her siblings to their children to Mom's children} her sister Amanda Houston and her were taken to a womans to be cared for as they were sick with the deadly virus of 1917-1919. Their father came back after they were well, the woman wanted to be paid for their care and he would not pay and left without them. It is not known what happen to Amanda as a child, Mom went into foster care which in those days was not always the best thing, per Mom she was past around from family to family and at most homes she was just a slave from sun up to sun down for the most part. She was put in a Catholic orphanage as a teenager, where they decided to gave her a new name of Mary Theresa Smith, to start off with a new live. After a few years as a young woman she changed it to Marie Smith, but after a couple of bad marriages she went back to Mary Theresa Houston.
Because of the above. Mom did not know what year she was born and Social Security had to give her one and they chose 1905, at the time she died we had not found her correct birth year so 1905 was put on stone.
