Indian Wars Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. He received the award on July 12, 1892 for his actions as a 2nd lieutenant in the 6th US Cavalry, US Army at the Battle of Big Dry Fork, Arizona Territory on July 17, 1882, during the Apache Wars. After attending Centre College in Danville, Kentucky, he received an appointment to the US Military Academy at West Point, New York and graduated in 1879 with a commission as a 2nd lieutenant in the 6th US Cavalry. Following his service during the Indian Campaigns in the western US, he served in the Philippine-American War at the turn of the 20th century. He advanced through the ranks and in January 1917 he was promoted to the rank of brigadier general and retired from the US Army the following year with 39 years of continuous military service. He then moved to Longport, New Jersey where he died at the age of 85. He authored the book "Apache Days and After" (1941). His Medal of Honor citation reads: "Gallantly charged hostile Indians, and with his carbine compelled a party of them to keep under cover of their breastworks, thus being enabled to recover a severely wounded soldier."
