Obituary - LAYTON -- Paul Warren Worthen, 85, passed away peacefully at the LDS Hospital on May 23, 2000.
He was born April 23, 1915 to Lenora Wilson and Lester Henry Worthen. He attended schools in Salt Lake City and graduated from West High School at age 16. He worked his way through the University of Utah during the Depression and graduated in 1938, the only graduate from that class hired by General Electric. His career with GE started in Schenectady, NY as a test engineer. He moved to Salt Lake City and later to Boise where he spent 26 years as a sales engineer for large equipment.
He was instrumental in establishing the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) in Idaho. He was elected Idaho State Representative from the 16th District for four terms (1969-1975 and 1978-1979).
He married Billie Elaine Winkelman on Sept. 2, 1939. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple. They had five children. She preceded him in death in 1980.
He married Mae Lundberg Kinard in Ogden, Utah in 1981. They moved from Boise to Layton, Utah in 1988.
Paul was a faithful member of the LDS Church and served in several capacities, including bishop of the Boise Eighth Ward. He and his wife, Mae, served a mission to Charlotte, North Carolina from 1982-1984.
He is survived by five children: J. C. (Coralee) of Boise, ID; Bobbie (Steve) Christensen of Ririe, ID; Scott (Sharla) of Boise, ID; Judy (Bill) Hunter of Provo, UT; Marti (Dan) Scott of Boise, ID. Other survivors include his loving wife, Mae of Layton, UT; and her children: NaDene (Seth) Jenkins of Idaho Falls, ID; J. Spencer (Lynette) Kinard of Fruit Heights, UT; Lynette (Steve) Day of Layton, UT; his brother, Robert D. (Bonnie) Worthen and brother-in-law, Guy Alder, both of Salt Lake City. He leaves a legacy of 19 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, 12 step-grandchildren and 21 step-great-grandchildren.
His parents; his wife, Billie; two sisters, Vera Jensen Goodell and Afton Alder; three grandchildren and one step-grandchild, all preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 30, 2000 at 11 a.m. in the Evergreen Chapel, 2435 East Canyon Rim (1500 North), Layton, Utah. Friends may call Monday from 6-8 p.m. at Lindquist's Layton Mortuary, 1867 North Fairfield Road, and at the church Tuesday from 9:45-10:45 a.m. prior to the service.
Interment in the Kaysville City Cemetery.
