James S. Bates was born on August 21, 1857 in Michigan to Francis and Lois (Harrington) Bates.

On October 5, 1880 in Ravenna, Michigan he married Eva Devenport and together they had 9 children, Myrtle May, Herbert James, Alfred Lyle, Edith, Bertha, Ethel, Hazel, and James Lester Bates.

He died on March 9, 1926 in Donken, Michigan at the age of 67.

DONKEN RESIDENT SUMMONED - James Bates Succumbs at Home to Attack of Heart Trouble.

James Bates, aged 63, passed away at his home in Donken, Tuesday. Death is ascribed to heart trouble.

Surviving are his widow, three sons, Herbert, James and Alfred, all of Flint; and five daughters, Mrs. Amos Buffin and Mrs. Roy Berrenger of Grand Rapids; Mrs. Owen Warner of Big Rapids; Mrs. Bud McCraney of Reed City, Mich., and Mrs. William Worst of Dighton, Mich.

The body will be removed to Big Rapids where the funeral will be held.
