She married first a RICHARD BUTLAND in Franklin County, Indiana, 27 Oct 1834. She was quite young at the time-15, and he was much older. He was reported to have been a professor of languages and died about 1835. Her sisters, Emeline and Adeline Corocker, twins, were born in Indiana. The family then moved to Jacksonville, Illinois where her brother, Charles S. Crocker was born in 1838. The Sampson Crocker family then went from Jacksonville, Ill., to Henry County, Iowa in about 1840. But, Mary Butland showed up in Fort Madison, Iowa, in the 1850 Census with her daughter, and then became one of the Crocker family members that traveled across the plains to California in 1850 with a group of about 50 travelers, mostly related persons. Most of the group ended up in Placerville, California, with a small group who quit after an Indian attack. The rest of the story is from family that she married a man named Philo B. Fox and that either he already had a son or they had a son named Edwin who was born in 1864 in the state of Washington. The name I was told was Philo Fox as the husband and the son, Edwin Fox. Mary's obituary identified him as a son along with her daughter Josephine.
Mary was born in England in 1819 and came with her parents as a baby to Canada first before they came to Baltimore. She likely traveled with her parents across the country 1st to Cincinnati, Ohio, then Franklin County, Indiana, where she married, and then where her youngest brother Charles was born near Jacksonville, Ill., and the rest of the family went to Henry County, Iowa but she ended up in Fort Madison, Iowa, with her daughter-why? AND What happened during her time in California is not known. My attempts to find any record of her there in 1860, 1870 or 1880 have been unsuccessful. Family said she died in Redwood City, Cal. before 1904 as she was reported as deceased when Emeline died in 1904 She died in Redwood City, Cal., in Dec. 1899. One would think she was in Placerville, Cal., with her brothers, but I could not find any reference to her there. She does not seem to show up on any census in California that I could find after her arrival there.
A Find a Grave researcher looked for her grave site but stated that there was no headstone to be found--just a patch of grass. Seems she was been an obscure person all her life and even now little is known about this person.
If she was the biological mother of Edwin Fox, then she was in Washington in 1864, but reported to be in Kansas 1868, but then went to California. I have found a Mary Fox but she was reportedly stating she was born in 1830 not abt 1820--maybe she was fudging on her birth for some reason but how did she avoid the census?
(Note: When she went to California, she left her daughter behind in Iowa to be educated and entrusted to others. Unclear of the relationship between the daughter and mother, but she was with the daughter after she married and moved to Kansas.)
