Suddenly Summoned Hence

"By the sudden death of James Crocker last Wednesday, the 22nd instant, Coloma and the county have lost another early resident and good citizen. He had been up and attending to business during the day, and soon after retiring in apparent good health, died of heart failure, a disease of which heartless people never die. Startled by his quick and heavy breathing, his family had hurried to his bedside, but only to feel how powerless they were to save a life dearer to them then their own.

At the time of his death, the subject of this notice was 64 years of age. He was a native of Ohio and pioneer of the 50's in Coloma. His wife, a sister of ex Supervisor, Robert McKay, and four children Harry, Mabel, Will and Sadie, survive to remember how good a husband and father he was. All but one of the daughters, who was absent at school, were around him when he died.

His funeral yesterday, Friday, was conducted by Rev. C. C. Pierce under the auspices of El Dorado Lodge No. 188 A.O.U.W. of which he was a beloved brother. From his home to the church, thence to the oldest cemetery of the county, at classic Coloma, he was followed by the whole community, as he had followed most of his generation to its last monumental resting place."

NOTE: Burial also is documented in this cemetery in the El Dorado County Cemetery Book. Sadly, because of the location of this historic cemetery well off the beaten path it has been hit by uncaring vandals on more than one occasion. Many headstones are broken or missing all together.
