James, 87, was the son of James and Mattie Carter Abel. He married Minnie Spotsville in 1910. She died in 1946. He married Ruth Portee in 1951. She died in 1975.
Survivors include sons, Dennie and Joe of Decatur, Ivan of Sacramento, Calif.; daughters, Maurine Abel, Charlene Softly, Lula Mae Freeman, Maggie Pugh, Alma Jean Hart, and Clara Abel, all of Decatur; stepson, Clifford Portee of Decatur; stepdaughters, Frankie Slaughter of Decatur, Gertrude Taylor of New York City; brothers, Albert of Moline, Joe and Alfred, both of Kansas City, Mo. One son, six brothers and six sisters preceded him in death.
