Chico Record, Wednesday Morning, November 30, 1910, pg 4 col 4-5: Daughter Goes to Awaken Father, Only to Find Him Cold In Death. Matthew Hale Lothrop Died Peacefully in Cabin on Nord Avenue. Deceased was Widely Known Throughout Northern California. When Miss Elizabeth Lothrop entered the cabin occupied by her father, Matthew Hale Lothrop, on Nord avenue, to awaken him that he might be in time for breakfast yesterday morning, she discovered that her parent had died during the night. The aged man was lying in bed apparently asleep, but when he failed to answer to his daughter's summons, the girl placed her hand on his head and found that her father was dead.

Lothrop died some time during Monday night or Tuesday morning from the effects of a third stroke of paralysis. He had been ill for some time, and Monday night consulted a physician. He left the office of the physician feeling in good spirits, and when he bade his wife and family good night nothing unusual was notice in his condition.

Yesterday morning he failed to appear at breakfast, and Mrs. Lothrop, who is living with her children at 86 Rio Chico, sent her daughter to awaken her father.

Matthew Hale Lothrop was a native of Canada, having been born at Easton Corner, Wolf county, on May 2, 1855. He came to California thirty years ago. Four year later, in Orland he was married. For several years he conducted the general merchandise store at Jacinto for the Glenn estate. Eleven years ago he removed with his family to Chico and made this his home until his death. He was a carpenter by trade and had to spend many months away from home. He was at one time head timberman at the Bully Hill mines in Shasta county, and later operated the air compressor there. Last July he returned to his family in Chico. On September 23d a fire destroyed his home on Nord avenue. He had a number of head of stock, pigeons and chickens, and in order to care for them he erected a little building on the scene of the fire, where he spent the nights. His family lived in Rio Chico and he took his meals with them.

The deceased was an honored citizen. He was always willing to extend the hand of charity to those in need, and in his death many will lose a sincere friend and helper. He is survived by his wife; three daughters, Mrs. Mary Matthews of Orland, Ruby Lothrop, and Elizabeth Lothrop; and a son, H.H. Lothrop, all of Chico. A brother, J.W. Lothrop, living in Boston, and another E.T. Lothrop, living in Ogden, Utah, also mourn his death.

M.H. Lothrop was a member of the Blue Lodge of Masons, the Masonic Chapter, the Knights Templar, the Mystic Shriners, and the Woodmen of the World. The funeral will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Engle undertaking parlors on Broadway.

Coroner Wallace was summoned yesterday morning, but decided not to hold an inquest, as the deceased had been under the care of a physician, and a local doctor signed the death certificate. An inquest would therefore have been a needless expense.

M.H. Lothrop was interred on December 1, 1910 at Sec 8,C Lot 123, sp 5, per the Chico Cemetery Association Records.
