William was the son of Thomas George Mary Elder & Isabella Matilda Toon. He married Virginia Elizabeth Huckaby on 23 December 1893 & they had 9 children. As a young man, William became involved in the lumber business in Marmaduke, AR, & eventually married the oldest daughter of the owner of the mill where he was a sawyer. They moved to Stonewall, TN, where he set up his own sawmill. William died from a stroke.
