William was the son of Basil Spalding Elder & Elizabeth Miles Snowden. He was an archbishop. At age 12, William entered Mount St. Marys. From the time he entered the college until his graduation, he was at the head of his class in every subject. By 1838 when he was only 19, William was teaching third year Latin at the college. in 1842, he went to Rome to attend college & received a degree as Doctor of Divinity. Father Elder was ordained a priest in Rome 29 March 1846. After ordination, he taught at Mount St. Mary College in Emmitsburg, MD, until he was appointed bishop of Natchez, MS. Father Elder was consecrated bishop in the Cathedral of Baltimore 3 May 1857. On 4 July 1883, he became archbishop of Cincinnati.
