Hazzard's History, Henry Co., IN.
Isaac Chenoweth, a merchant, was born November 10, 1819, in Pike Co., OH, a son of Joseph and Elizabeth (Bristol) Chenoweth.
At the age of ten, he was left an orphan, so he lived with his grandfather, Reuban Bristol, until he was nineteen, when he went to Piketon, Pike Co., OH, and served for two years as Deputy Sheriff, under Sheriff Colonel James Moore. For the next nine years, he drove cattle and hogs to the Eastern market, with the exception of two years, when he was with James Emmitt, of Waverly, Pike Co., OH, and less than a year in a dry-goods and clothing store of Moses Ambrug, in Piketon and Jasper, Pike Co. OH. On April 1, 1850, he left New York, with several young men, for the gold mines of California, arriving at San Francisco on June 28th.
In October of 1862, Isaac married Elizabeth C., the daughter of Absalom and Mary Chenoweth. Elizabeth died on September 19, 1879 and on August 1, 1880, he married Hester Sheets, of Middletown, Henry Co., IN.
Isaac rented the Bristol farm for a year, when he moved to Middletown, where he bought property. He enlisted in December, 1863, in the 124th Indiana Infantry; was promoted to Orderly Sergeant, and received his discharge on September 1, 1865. Whereupon, he returned to Henry county, and with his brother-in-law, A. W. C., opened the Pioneer Hardware Store, in Middletown. He engaged in dealing with stock a few years, and in 1873 he again embarked in the mercantile business. He was a Republican, politically, and cast his first vote for W. H. Harrison, on the Whig ticket, in 1840.
