THE DAILY BULLETIN, Martinsville, Va., Mon., Aug. 1, 1938, p. 1, col. 2:

Tragedy stalked he highways of this section again Sunday as death claimed Charles Yancey "Buddy" Blackard, 7-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Blackard of Smith River Hill in South Martinsville, Sunday morning, after being struck by an automobile driven by Willie Haynes, 20, of Park Street.

The Blackard child and friend, June Ingram, were standing in front of the Blackard home, prepared to attend Sunday School, when Haynes, going at an excessive rate of speed up the hill, lost control of the machine as he rounded the curve, striking the Blackard child with such a full force that he was hurled ten or more feet into the air. The child was thrown against a pile of rocks and died before his father, who was in the home and heard the crash, could reach him.

The Ingram child barely escaped death as one wheel of the speeding car passed over her foot. The car then plunged over an embankment into a ravine, but neither the driver nor two occupants were injured.

Final rites for the Blackard child were held Monday afternoon from Wesley Methodist Church, where he attended Sunday School. Burial following in Oakwood Cemetery. Surviving besides the patents are one brother and a sister.
