William was the son of James W. and Elizabeth (Burch) Buttry. He married Sarah Jane McKenzie, daughter of James Vickers and Margaret (Millspaugh) McKenzie, on 14 August 1850 in White County, Illinois. They were the parents of two children, Margaret Elizabeth and James Monroe. Sarah Jane died on 29 November 1857.
William enlisted on 6 August 1861 as a private and served in in Company G, 29th Infantry Regiment Illinois. He died of disease while serving his country.
