Architect and Civil Engineer. Born in Haddom CT to Henry and Cynthia Brainard, he became a member of the architectural firm of Carrere and Hastings in 1901, later becoming a partner in the firm. He assisted in the designs and supervised the construction of the NY Public Library, the Congressional buildings at Washington, DC, the extension of the U. S. Capitol, as well as the Yale Memorial buildings and the Cornell University building. He also designed the New Theater in Manhattan and the industrial villages of the U. S. Steel Corporation.

He retired from Carrere and Hastings in 1907 to open an office as consulting engineer. He was a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects, a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, the Architectural League of New York, and the City Planning Association.

In 1909 he was married to Miss Jean Sawyer of Bangor ME. No children were born to this marriage.
