Charles enlisted in the army during the Civil War in Company F, 103rd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, August 11, 1862, at Brownhelm Township, Lorain County Ohio for a term of 3 years. He was discharged January 29, 1863 on a Surgeon's Certificate of Disability.

He was born in Brownheld Twp., Lorain Co. OH. He was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic, Howard Post 259, of Strawberry Point, Iowa. Family suvivors included: a brother Anson, of Strawberry Point, IA; George, living in Ohio, sisters Mrs. Emeline Cooley of Ohio, Mrs. Belle Dunning and Mrs. Flora Smith, both of Strawberry Point, Iowa.

His brother, Anson, left Ohio with his wife, Elizabeth, and settled in Strawbery Point, Iowa. Charles followed them there. He first appears there in 1900 although he may have relocated there sooner. Charles never married.
