Obituary from Lebanon Times. July 23, 1931

Mark, the oldest son William and Mariah Schemmerhorn Carpenter was born near Sherrard in Henry County, Illinois, October 3, 1862 and finished the course of his life on Tuesday, July 21, 1931, at the home of his son, John in Lebanon, Kansas. He attained the goodly age of 63 years, 9 months and 18 days. When a small child his parents moved to Gratiot, Wisconsin, where Mark grew to manhood.
On November 27, 1884, Mark Carpenter and Miss Carolyn Nettie Anderson were married. For 47 years this happy relationship continued. To this union were born nine children, five girls and four boys. On Janurary 1, 1928 the oldest daughter, Rosa Kimsey crossed the vale into eternity.

The Carpenters came to Smith county, Kansas in March of 1894 and were residents of this place for thirthy years. In 1924 they moved to Jefferson county, Nebraska, near Endicott. About five months ago Mr. Carpenter became afflicted with some malady that soon sent him to his bed where he remained for some five weeks when he rallied and a change was deemed best. He came to visit his old home and was taken to his bed again where he remained for some thirteen weeks here. Death in it's mercy released him from his sufferings.
His passing leaves his beloved wife, his children, John, Frank, and Mrs. Nellie Atwill of Lebanon, Ks., Martin of Ord, Ne., Ernest of Center, Co., Mrs. Florence Eustace, Endicott, Ne., Pearl Hart , Fairbury, Ne., and Myra the youngest daughter who remains with her parents in the home. There are 25 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Mr. Carpenter was the member of a large family of which five brothers and two sisters join in sorrow at his passing. They are Jerry, John, Lawrence, William, Desmond and Mrs. Eliza Nevels, who live in and about Darlington, Wis., and Mrs. Frank Schemmerhorn of Correctionville, Ia. with a host of friends and neighbors mourn the leaving of a kind husband and father and a true friend.
Mr. Carpenters great interest in life was looking after his family. His home seemed to be his ideal, when illness came to those he knew and loved he rendered every assistance within his power and when they had passed from earthly touch he found a pleasure in visiting their resting places where he cared for their resting places with loving hands.
