Mrs. Maria Carpenter died at the home of her son, Jerry Carpenter, of Wiota, Sunday evening of last week.
She was born near Sharon, Wis., Nov. 19, 1847, her age being 72 years, 3 months and 11 days. She was married to William Carpenter in 1863 and has been a widow for about seven years. She is survived by six sons and four daughters, namely: Martin, of Kansas, Jerry of Wiota, Mrs. Eliza Nevels of Darlington, Rosa Schemehorn of Iowa, Mary Duvall of South Wayne, William of Gratiot, John of Lamont, Lawrence of Palmyra, Wis., and Desmond of MIneral Point, all being present at the funeral except Martin, who was unable to come on account of sickness.
The funeral was held Tuesday, Rev. Campbell of South Wayne officiating, and was attended by a large concourse of her old friends and neighbors. She was a woman of whom it can truthfully be said, " she did her duty as a daughter, wife and mother, and merits the reward of a well spent life."
