Obituary - Willliam Edward Baker, Spartanburg Herald 7-6-02

BOILING SPRINGS - William Edward Baker, 87, of 916 Wesley Court, Boiling Springs, formerly of 591 Gramling School Road, Inman, S.C. passed away at 5 p.m. Friday, July 5, 2002, at Boiling Springs Retirement Center.

Born in Godwin, N.C. on Monday, Dec. 14th, 1914, he was the son of the late William T. and Martha Smith Baker.

He retired from Southern Railway and owned the Barbershop at Southern Shops.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Virginia Tilley Baker in February, 2001.

He was a charter member of Springs of Grace Lutheran Church (formerly Nativity Lutheran Church) in Boiling Springs, served as superintendent of Sunday School for 12 years and served on the church council for many years.

He is survived by three daughters, Janice B. Jolley of Columbus, N.C., Nancy B. Melson of Lincolnton, N.C., Ruth B. Hurley of Melbourne, Fla.; two sons, William S. Baker of Matthews, N.C., Thomas E. Baker of Ramona, Calif.; three sisters, Ethel Jackson of Godwin, N.C., Nell Noles of Charlotte, N.C., Doris Jackson of Dunn, N.C.; and five granddaughters, Dateria Bagwell of Columbus, N.C., Sharon Jolley of Concord, N.C., Joy Smyth of Pensacola, Fla., Holly Zierden of Poway, Calif., and Hope Smyth of Greensboro, N.C. He was preceded in death by a brother Tad Baker and two sisters, Sophia Williams and Eula Graham.

Funeral services will be held at Seawright Funeral Chapel at 11 a.m. Monday, with Pastor Craig K. Abbe officiating.

Mausoleum encryptment will be held at Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Inman, S.C.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Seawright Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Springs of Grace Lutheran Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 160457 Boiling Springs, S.C. 29316.
