Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. Served in the Civil War as First Lieutenant and commander of Company E, 4th Delaware Volunteer Infantry. He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery at Rowanty Creek, Virginia on February 5, 1865. His citation reads “Swam the partly frozen creek, under fire, in the attempt to capture a crossing”. His Medal was issued on February 13, 1865. Captain S. Rodmond Smith of Company C also swam the creek under heavy Rebel fire and was awarded the Medal of Honor as well. Lt. Buckingham would eventually be promoted to Captain.
