Delpha Rountree was born 1828 in Edgecombe County, NC, one of 8 known children (2 boys/6 girls) born to farmers Wiley/Willie Rountree and his wife, Martha Dew. Delpha's name has been found as Delphia, Delpha and Delphy in various public records; and her surname has been found as both Rountree and Roundtree.

She was the paternal grandchild of Moses Rountree (1754-1804) and Mary Theresa Thomas of Edgecombe, and later Wayne Co, NC; and gr-grandchild of Frances Rountree & Mary Coleman of Craven Co, later Wayne County NC. She is a direct descendant of this family's patriarch Frances Rountree of England (1670-1733) who came to Chowan County, NC in the early 1700's. On her mother's side, she was the maternal grandchild Jonathan/John Dew and Sarah Thomas of Edgecombe County, NC.

William Woodard, Jr. was born 1830 in a portion of Wayne County that later became Wilson County, the 3rd of 6 known surviving children (5 boys/1 girl) born to wealthy farmer William Woodard Sr. and his wife, Elizabeth Simms.

He was the paternal grandson of David Woodard and Elizabeth Bullock and gr-grandson of Elisha & Mary Woodard, all of Edgecombe County. He was a direct descendant of this family's patriarch, Christopher Woodard of England (b.ca. 1594) who was an early settler in Virginia. On his mother's side, he was the maternal grandson Barnes Simms and Martha Dew of Wayne County.

Delpha was about 26 years old when she married 24-year old William Woodard of Wilson in about 1854. The couple would become parents to 6 known children, with both her daughters (Varina & Cora) marrying Charles Brantley Aycock, the future Governor of North Carolina. Their children were: William Woodard III (1855-1921), Mary Woodard (1859-1859), Alice "Varina" Woodard (1861-1889), Leonidas "Lee" Polk Woodard (1864-1941), Patty R. Woodard (1866), and Cora Lily Woodard (1868-1952).

Delpha died in 1892 at age 64. Her husband of 38 years would take a 2nd wife, Eleanor, the same year. Her husband survived her 18 years, passing in 1910 at age 80.
