He was the Philologist on the "United States Exploring Expedition" of Capt. Charles Wilkes, U.S. Navy, which sailed around the planet, 1838 - 1842.

He was the author of works such as "The Iroquois Book of Rites", c 1883.

His mother was the poetess, Sara Josepha Buell Hale, who wrote the popular "Mary Had a Little Lamb".
