John Close III was the 3rd son of John Close II and Elizabeth Gibbons. He was born March 27, 1796 in Albany County, New York and died at the age of 55. He married Cornelia Hollenbeck on January 15, 1817 in Bern, Albany County, New York.

John's father, John Close II, and the Jacob Hollenbeck family, immigrated with their families to Indiana. They went to Pittsburgh in wagons drawn by oxen. Then on rafts they floated down the Ohio landing at Madison, Indiana. They could have taken land along the Ohio bottoms but it was reputed unhealthy so they sought the uplands and finally settled near Lexington, Indiana.

He and his wife came to Scott County and filed a land patent in 1818 before Scott County was formed in 1820. In the 1850 census for Scott Co. he is listed as County Treasurer.

Cornelia lived 34 years without her husband and died February 8, 1885 in Scott Co. Her buriel place is unknown for now, but she could possible be buried near her husband in a unmarked grave or near her daughter Lydia Ann Amos at Horner Cemetery.

They were the parents of 11 children all but one was born in Scott County. Three died young.
