Born in Dover Township, the son of William S. & Eliza Amanda Aughenbaugh Picking, and was the husband of Christiana (Kling) Picking, whom he married October 18, 1858, in Dover. In 1860, he was a wheelwright living in Dover Township. He stood 5' 5" tall and had brown hair and hazel eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in York August 16, 1864, and mustered into federal service in Harrisburg August 27 with Co. H, 200th Pa Inf, serving at the rank of private until honorably discharged with his company on May 30, 1865.
