(For years, I was sure that this was the John Clark, who served in Co. I of the 86th Illinois from the Lancaster, Illinois area with Col. Fahnestock. Later I learned that the John Clark who served in Co. I had left for Nebraska after returning from the service and is buried there.)

John Q. Clark was born in 1836 in either Indiana County, Ohio or in Harrison County, Ohio. John is believed to have been the son of James Clark, who was born in Pennsylvania c. 1806, and his wife, Eleanor, who was born in Ohio, though his death record states his father's name was William Clark. James Clark's father may have been Joshua Clark, who was born in Maryland.

From this record we can see that William Clark, who may be an uncle of John's, was born in Pennsylvania c. 1805, and that the Clark family was in Ohio from at least 1835 until about 1862, when they came to Illinois, where they settled in Peoria County, near Harker's Corners and Lancaster, Illinois. John Q. A. Clark claimed Harkers Corners as his place of residence when he enlisted in February of 1865.
