The railroad discarded batteries while there was still some power left in them. He would bring those home and hook them together to light the backyard so that they could play croquet at night. His wife died in 1935. After his retirement he operated a clock and bicycle repair shop for many years. He suffered from dementia and in Spring of 1955 it was arranged for him to rent a room at the the County Farm where he could receive care and supervision. Late in the evening of the 23rd of November the family got a phone call from the Home that he had wandered off and a search was commenced for him. All that day he had said he "was going to be with Momma for their anniversary". The next day he was found dead in a farmers back yard. That farm was on the path to Body Cemetery and it is believed that he was walking there.
