Clifford Henderson served as a Private in Company A, 9th Battalion, Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the Spanish-American War.

He died of disease in the fall of 1898 at Camp Meade, near Middletown, Pennsylvania.

He was buried in the Gettysburg National Cemetery on September 8, 1898.

He was one of only 5 African-American soldiers to be buried in the Civil War section of the cemetery.
