Nicholas Farrell served as a Private in the 9th Battalion, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, during the Spanish-American War.

He died of disease in the fall of 1898 at Camp Meade, near Middletown, Pennsylvania.

He was buried in the Gettysburg National Cemetery on November 28, 1898.

He is one of only 5 African-American soldiers to be buried in the Civil War section of the cemetery.
