Death Takes Jackson County Soldier
Funeral services for Mr. James Griffeth Barnett, aged 84, who died at his home in Center, Wednesday night at 11:20 o'clock, after an illness of two weeks, were held Thursday at the Center Methodist church. Rev. J. P. Cooper, pastor of the Baptist church, officiating, assisted by Rev. Will Barker, pastor of the Presbyterian church. Interment followed in the Center cemetery.
Pallbearers were Messrs. E.S., Rylee, J. A. Fitzpatrick, W. M. Matthews, H. P. Matthews, J. H. Dailey and Hoke Smith.
Mr. Barnett is survived by his widow Mrs. Sara Ann Barnett; three daughters Mrs. S. B. Hay, Center, Mrs. J. F. Burrell, Hiawassee; Mrs. J.J. Coile, Athens, four sons, Messrs. J. B. Barnett, Athens; A. G. Barnett, Decatur, O. T. Barnett, Nicholson, and N.W. Barnett, Little River. Fla., and twenty-nine grandchildren and eight grandchildren.
Mr. Barnett was born in Jackson county, and had spent 74 of his 84 years in this county. He was a member of the Baptist church, and leaves a host of friends, who will mourn his death.
The deceased served in the War Between the States with the Eastern Army, under the command of General Longstreet, and was at station near Richmond. He served for the entire duration of the war, with the exception of four months, when he was recovering from a wound. He was shot in the knee, and the wound crippled him for life. At the close of the war, Mr. Barnett returned to Jackson county, and took up farming. He was one of the most beloved and respected citizens of the county, and was well known throughout this section.
