Paul E. Mottern, 87, Laurelbrooke Landing, Brookville, died Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2008, at the McKinley Health Center of Laurelbrooke Landing. He was born July 31, 1921, in Dora, a son of the late William Carl and Effie Grace (Lingenfelter) Mottern, Oct. 19, 1941, in Valier, Mr. Mottern married Marjorie Fern Mitchell, who preceded him in death Nov. 23, 1988, in Oliveburg, Feb. 12, 1995, he married Esther Whitaker Wisniewski, who survives. He lived in Frostburg for many years until Penelec transferred him to Somerset in 1966. Mr. Mottern was employed by Penelec from 1945 until 1981. Upon retirement he returned to the area and lived in Oliveburg until he moved to Laurelbrooke Landing. Mr. Mottern was a former member of the Hopewell United Methodist Church of Frostburg. He was also a member of Masonic Lodge No. 534 of Free & Accepted Masons. He was a talented woodworker, carpenter and electrician, making clocks, lamps and furniture for the family. He had a green thumb and always had a beautiful garden and orchard. Mr. Mottern loved his dogs, who were his faithful companions.
In addition to his wife, surviving relatives include a daughter, Marjorie JoAnne Shively and husband Thomas P. of Robertsville; a son, Larry Paul Mottern and wife Marguerite of Hacketstown, N.J.; four grandchildren, Pamela Joan Mottern Poole and husband Mark Allen Poole, and Denise Marie Mottern Reilly and husband Stephen Reilly, all of New Jersey, Daniel Walter Shively and wife Denise of Bishop, Calif., and Sharon Rae Shively LaBorde and husband Paul Edward LaBorde of Sykesville; five great-grandchildren, Quinn Allen Poole and Samantha Marle Poole, Morgan Catherine Reilly and Shane Patrick Reilly, all of New Jersey, and Daniel Joseph Shively of Bishop, California; two step-great-grandchildren, Shawn LaBorde and Samantha LaBorde of Sykesville; a brother, Frank H. Mottern and wife Helgi of Tonawanda, N.Y.; and a sister, Jeanne Mottern Brocious and husband Donald of Timblin. Also surviving are two step-daughters, Esther Ann Hartsell and husband Thomas of Pittsburgh, and Roberta Jean Gsell and husband Gary of Jacksonville, Fla. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. today at the funeral home with Pastor Randy L. Evans officiating. Interment will be in the Hopewell Cemetery, Frostburg. The family suggests that memorials be made to the American Cancer Society, the Clarion-Forest Hospice or a charity of the donor's choice.
