JOHANNES HINCKEL-According to St Paul's Lutheran Church records at Fleetwood, Pa. where he is buried, he was born 7/24/1796 and died 6/18/1862. The single grave site is section 2 row 10 behind where the old church was located. The tombstone is no longer legible. Johannes was born probably in Winsdor township. Babtism records between 1770 and 1810 are lacking and apparently missing at Zion Lutheran. We know he was confirmed by Rev Engel of Zion's Lutheran Church at Windsor Castle, April 5, 1823.
The Berks County courthouse in Reading has on file an indenture or property purchase, Vol 35, pages 165,166 by a John Hinkel, carpenter, from Phillip Hinckel and wife Maria, July 17, 1820 "for 400 pounds current money", containing 35 acres of that part of the property owned originally by George Hinckel (4/25/1755-12/22/1816) which was converted by contract 11/2/1816 with three of his sons, Phillip, Jonathan and Jacob, for the sale of his real and personal estate, for the care of his wife, Margaret and the other children.
The 1820 census of Windsor township records a John or Johannes, single between age 16 and 26 and the only John listed for Windsor township.
According to the old Nurenberg family bible of 1765 in the possession of Norwood Hinkel, Salme was the mother of Mathilda, Levinia, Susana and Katrina, all born in Windsor Township. Mathilda was babtized 5/8/1823 and sponsor was grandmother Margaretha Hinckel. Katrina was babtized 9/6/1829 by Rev. Tups and sponsors were George and Katrina Hinckel. The rest of the children, according to the family bible records, were all born in Maidencreek Township to Johannes' second wife Polly (Schaeffer) Hinckel. Babtismal sponsors for Johannes S., Elizabeth, Joel and David were either brothers or nephews to Johanes Hinckel.
It is probable that Johannes operated the 35 acre farm until his wife Salme died and then remarried and moved to Maidencreek Township nearby and possibly continued his carpenter trade. No effort has been made to trace the property deed sale. A couple of his grandchildren have reported that he was known to have lived with his family in a log cabin just before entering Fleetwood(MaidenCreek Township} along the road from Pricetown. The log home has since disappeared. Johannes and his children dropped the (c) in their name eventually. (The name was later also spelled Hinkle- n.s.)

Property records for Daniel Ohlinger of Ruscombmanor, show that his neighbor was
John Hinkel. Bridgens 1860 Berks map, and the 1850-60 census, place this property on Keller road between Park and Walnuttown roads. Bridgens map incorrectly list his property as F. Hinkel. The Barlets are spelled as Ballot, a
few doors over.
