Last Thursday evening one of Sun Prairie's old and respected citizens, John Edwin Mann died at his home in this village at the advanced age of 89 years, 6 months, and 8 days. The cause of his death was a complication of diseases brought on by old age. John Edwin Mann was born in Otsego County, NY on April 29, 1817. In 1842 he came to Illinois, where he was married on July 5 of that year to Emily Josephine Bliven of Fall River, MA. In 1850 they came to Madison where Mr. Mann engaged in the livery business with his brother, Andrew. After 5 years he moved on a farm in the town of Fitchburg, where he remained until 1872 when he took possession of the American House at Sun Prairie and for a number of years traveled for the Knickerbocker Co. of Jackson, MI. They had 11 children; nine of whome, 5 sons and 4 daughters are living. They are Mrs. Harriet Knapps of this village, Mrs. Louis Chittenden of California, Louis Mann of Jackson, MI, Fred and George of Melette, SD, Mrs. Howard Smith of Madison, Will T. Mann of this village, Charles of Chicago, and Mrs. Frank Ritchie of Jefferson. Their oldest son, Joseph died about 10 years ago. One daughter, Mrs. Juliette Seymour is also dead. Mr. Mann was Deputy Sheriff of Dane County for 6 years and superintendent of the poor for 3 years. For the last 18 years he has not been in active business. He was a man of upright character, noble, and generous. He was a Democrat in politics and a member of the Episcopal Church. The funeral services were held from the home last Saturday at two o'clock in the afternoon, Rev. C. W. stark officiating. The interment was in the family lot in the village cemetery.
