Gertrude Nicholson Allen, 91, of East Main Street, Sylva, died Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2010.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. today (Thursday, Oct. 28) in the chapel of Appalachian Funeral Services.

Burial will be in Keener Cemetery.

The family was scheduled to receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 27, at Appalachian Funeral Services.

Born Oct. 1, 1919, on Johns Creek in Cullowhee's Caney Fork community, she was a lifelong resident of Jackson County. She was a daughter of the late Hutson and Lola Stephens Nicholson.

She was a member of Sylva First Baptist Church and was a retired cafeteria employee for Jackson County Schools, having worked at Camp Laboratory School for many years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles T. Allen; one son, Johnny William Allen; two brothers, Manuel Nicholson and Clyde Nicholson; and one grandson.

Surviving are one son, Charles Hudson Allen of Sylva; two sisters, Martha Coward and Elizabeth Chester, both of Sylva; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
