Obituary:
Charles Henry "Smokey" Owenby, 88, a resident of Cleveland, passed away Wednesday, August 8, 2007 in a local healthcare facility. He was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the United States Navy serving in World War II. He was employed with Magic Chef for 45 years. Mr. Owenby was the son of the late Henry and Sophia Owenby [sic] and was also preceded in death by his great-grandson, Spencer Bateman and two brothers and six sisters.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Mary Frances Humberd Owenby of Cleveland; son and spouse: Bobby and Shirley Owenby of Cleveland; three grandchildren and spouses: Chris and Tammy Owenby of Charleston, Lisa and Chris Bateman of Hendersonville, TN, John David and Amy Owenby of Cleveland; great-grandchildren: Charlie Bateman, Benjamin Bateman, Caroline Bateman, Harry Owenby, Casey Owenby, Jake Owenby, Zachary Owenby, Anna Grace Owenby and Addie Beth Owenby; and also a host of friends.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Saturday in the chapel of Ralph Buckner Funeral Home with Reverend Ron Sorah officiating. Interment will follow in Macedonia Cemetery with military honors. A white dove release ceremony will conclude the service. Chris Bateman, Troy Copeland, Charles Dunson, Charles Hafley, John David Owenby and Chris Owenby will serve as pallbearers.
His family will receive friends from 6-9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
