Earle Byrne Markham was born on Oct. 2, 1892 to Carter Daniel and Elizabeth A. (Adair) Markham. On his father's side Earle's ancestry can be traced back to the King of Scotland in the 13th century. However, he was most proud of his Cherokee ancestry, being born in Indian Territory, Cherokee Nation which is now Oklahoma. He had 5 siblings, including a twin brother Hogan, and 7 half-siblings. Earle's great grandfather and the grandmother of Will Rogers were brother and sister. Earle was also distantly related to Clu Guligar, the actor. Earle's first wife Camille Lanmon died a horrible death from rabies. Earle married Gertrude Koch, daughter of Daniel and Marie Bachtle Koch, on November 14, 1948, in Independence, KS, where Gertrude taught in the public schools and Earl worked for Sinclair Oil Co. They were prepared to enjoy retirement when Gertrude suffered a stroke and died in 1967. Earle died in 1975.

Earle B. Marham, 83, longtime area resident, died Monday at 12:05 p.m. at the Pedigo Nursing Home where he had been a resident for several months. Funeral Services will be held Thursday at 2. p.m. in the Potts Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Donald G. Burt, pastor of the First United Presbyterian Church, officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery. The casket has been closed but friends may call to register at the funeral home. Earle Byrne Markham was born Oct. 2, 1892, in Indian Territory at a location known as Markham Prairie which is now known as Locust Grove, Okla. He was the son of Carter Daniel and Elizabeth A. (Adair) Markham. He attended school at Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, Okla., for two years and attended the Illinois Technical University in Chicago for two years. He then returned to Tahlequah and Tulsa and took business courses before entering the U.S. Army in World War I, serving in Texas. Following his discharge from the service he began employment with Sinclair Pipe Line Co. in Tulsa where he worked for five years before transferring to Bartlesville, Okla., where he was stationed until coming to the Independence office in later years. During his employment with Sinclair he was in the right-of-way department until his retirement ten years ago. He married Camille Lanmon and she preceded him in death. He married Gertrude Koch on Nov. 4, 1948 at the first United Presbyterian Church and she preceded him in death Feb. 15, 1967. Surviving is a twin brother David Hogan Markham of Mountain View, Calif. Two brothers and two sisters preceded him in death. The family may be contacted at 212 ½ S. 6th St.
