Colonel/Deacon Joseph Tuttle, who died at age 91, was a pillar of the early American community in Whippany and Hanover: churchman, veteran of the French and Indian War, county militia commander, judge, friend, husband, father, and neighbor. A widower since 1777, he had been predeceased by five wives*. His first and second spouses were named Abigail, his third and fourth were Marys, and his last, Isabella, died when he was 78. All are interred here in Whippany except the third Mrs. Tuttle, who is buried in the First Presbyterian Churchyard in nearby Hanover. His children were apparently born of his first two marriages. They include Joseph, James, Abigail, Comfort, and Phebe, and are buried here and in Hanover.

1. Abigail (nee Ogden), born c.1701, died c.1738, aged 37
2. Abigail (nee Nutman), born c.1701, died 1751, aged 50
3. Mary, born c.1703, died 1760, aged 56
4. Mary, born c.1716, died 1774, aged 58
5. Isabella, born c.1708, died 1777, aged 69

Mr. Tuttle's grave is marked by a brown sandstone ledger stone which appears to be the work of Uzal Ward of Newark.
The upper corners are embellished by pear-faced soul effigies, but nearly all of his epitaph has eroded. An 1894 transcription reads:

"This Monument is erected to the
Memory of Joseph Tuttle, Esq.
Who departed this life Nov. 5 1789
Aged 91 Years.
The tender names of father, husband, friend
And neighbor kind did through his life extend
In church & state he virtuous honor gained
And all his offices with truth sustained
As deacon, elder, colonel, judge he shone
While heav'n was his hope, his rest his home
Laden'd wiht honours, usefulness & years
He drop'd this clay & with ye saints appears"
